Paul Merson urges Liverpool to make a winter approach for Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal legend-turned-pundit Paul Merson believes Liverpool should make an approach for Aaron Ramsey in January in order to close the gap on Manchester City in the title pursuit. The Wales international has just eight months remaining on his existing contract with Arsenal and reports have already indicated that the club are not interested in discussing a renewal for him.

In a report covered by The Star, Merson said that the Reds should attempt to pursue Ramsey in January, should they hold an interest in the midfielder’s services, he quipped: “If Liverpool want him they might as well do a deal now. He would fit in there and he would help them challenge for the title. Manchester City are a much stronger, deeper team than Liverpool at the moment, but Ramsey could help change that. Whoever gets him will be getting a very good player. He makes good runs, scores goals, and has the vision to pick a pass.”

“Liverpool were widely expected to make a big-money signing in order to replace the departed Philippe Coutinho last summer“ but they eventually settled with Xherdan Shaqiri on a bargain after a deal for Nabil Fekir fell through at the final hurdle. Since then, they have gone through the league proceedings impressively with an 11-match unbeaten but they have struggled to “find the cutting edge “during the big encounters this term.

The Reds dropped a couple of points over the weekend after playing out a 1-1 draw against Arsenal on the road and the result has witnessed them drop to third on the table, four points behind reigning champions Manchester City, who are topping the standings. Next up, Liverpool have an away trip to Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League before returning home to face Fulham in the weekend league clash.
