Arsene Wenger tips Aaron Ramsey to become future Arsenal captain

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that Aaron Ramsey could take over the captain’s armband in the future.

The Welshman is one of the longest-serving players at the Emirates having joined from Championship club Cardiff City back in the summer of 2008.

Current skipper Per Mertesacker has announced his decision to hang up his boots next summer while his deputy Laurent Koscielny celebrated his 32nd birthday earlier this month. As a result, the north London club are likely to be planning for a future leader with Ramsey among the favourites due to his previous experience captaining the Wales national side.

Prior to the West Bromwich Albion game, Wenger was asked whether Ramsey would fit into the captaincy role, to which he replied: “Why not? It is all there. He has maturity, has improved technically and is more conscious of the importance of his technical qualities. His game is clean. He has a huge physical power. The target for him will be to have 30 games.”

In his peak, Ramsey has always produced standout performances for club and country, but the Welshman still has the tendency of suffering calf injuries, which are being related to the double leg-break inflicted by Ryan Shawcross back in 2010.

Nevertheless, he has had a successful career under Arsene Wenger after having scored the winning goal in the 2014 FA Cup final which ended their nine-year trophy drought. The Welshman popped up again in May this year as he netted the clincher in the 2-1 FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

Ramsey is contracted to the Gunners until the summer of 2019, and it is understood that talks are already underway over an extension as they look to avoid him from entering the final year of his deal. The likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are likely to leave the Gunners on free transfers next summer, but the club are hoping to avoid a similar instance with Ramsey in the future.

Ramsey expresses his disappointment following Oxlade-Chamberlain exit

Wales international Aaron Ramsey has revealed his disappointment after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was sold to Liverpool on transfer deadline day. The Gunners accepted a fee of around £35m from the Reds for the attacker following his reluctance to extend his contract beyond the end of the season.

The England international was also linked with a potential move to Chelsea earlier in the week, but he snubbed the Blues in favour of Liverpool, who provided him the assurance of playing in the central midfield role.

The England international was also linked with a potential move to Chelsea earlier in the week, but he snubbed the Blues in favour of Liverpool, who provided him the assurance of playing in the central midfield role.

Upon the midfielder’s exit, Ramsey took to Instagram to make his feelings clear over the move, but he left an unfortunate hash tag at the end which summed up the Gunners’ situation at the moment, he wrote: “Another of our British boys heading on to new things. Not only have we lost a great player we’ve lost a great guy in the changing room and it is sad to see you go mate. Had some great memories over the years playing alongside you and I wish you all the best with this new chapter in your life #theOX #shaaambles”

Shortly after, the Welshman had seen immense criticism directed towards the club for the situation, but Ramsey later clarified that the hash tag #shaambles was a nickname given to the 24-year-old due to him being always late for training, he added: “Let’s all calm down, ‘Shaaambles’ was a nickname used as a joke for the ox sometimes around the training ground. #personaljoke”

Arsene Wenger had the ambition of developing a British core at the Emirates, but things have not gone to plan over the years with the likes of Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having parted ways with the club whilst Carl Jenkinson and Jack Wilshere are in the last chance saloon with regards to their futures.

Ramsey, for one, has performed at a consistent level for the north London giants, but he recently apologised for his dismal effort in the 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool.
